How can LED lighting improve the passenger experience? (PART 1)

Advantages of changing conventional lighting for LED luminaires in passenger transport

The advantages of replacing traditional lights with LED lights in rail transport are many, but choosing them correctly is the key to the final result in passenger cars.

In the first place, the aesthetic result of the substitution of traditional luminaires for LED luminaires could be highlighted.

Lighting in the railway sector

In the two images you can see some of the advantages offered by LED lighting. We can see that the light efficiency is much higher (with an average of 90-130 lum/w), even taking into account the optical transmittance of polycarbonates suitable for the sector, such as Sabic Lexan F2000 (57%).

The useful life of the luminaires

Another very important advantage is the useful life of LED luminaires, which is between 30,000 and 50,000 hours of life, ostensibly reducing maintenance costs.

At the lighting level, the instant ignition stands out, for example (without the typical blinking of traditional fluorescent). This also leads us to its advantages in design, since the designs can be much more genuine and adaptable to the needs of space designers. The size in this sector is very important, since it achieves a decrease in size, which favors its installation in cars.

On the other hand, for interior designers, with CRI's between 80-95, they ensure that the colors selected in the design of the cars are faithfully reproduced among the passengers.

Lighting control intelligence

Lately in the sector, the electronic control of luminaires is gaining more and more importance. The power supplies of the LEDs allow the generation of 100% configurable scenes, in what is called "lighting control intelligence", which offers the possibility of generating specific scenarios:

– Imagine, for example, that the train is empty and cleaning tasks are being carried out. Pressing the "cleaning" scenario on the control, we would be able to adjust the lighting to what is strictly necessary for this task.

– Light sensors connected to the power supplies can be installed, which constantly regulate the interior lighting in the wagon, according to the natural light that enters through the windows.
